Smt. Krishna Tirath is a member of the Union Cabinet in the Government of India holding the portfolio of Minister of State (Independent charge), Women and Child Development since May, 2009. As a member of Indian National Congress, she has successfully contested 7 elections and served as a Metropolitan Councillor, Member of Legislative Assembly from 1984-2004, and currently represents the North West constituency of Delhi as a member of parliament in the 15th Lok Sabha. She has also been the Deputy speaker of Delhi Assembly. She has served in important parliamentary committees, such as the Parliament Standing Committee on Women Empowerment; Member of General Purposes Committee, Committee on Social Justice and Empowerment, Committee on Personnel, Public grievances, Law and Justice etc. As Chairperson of Parliament Standing Committee on Women Empowerment, she steered the publications of 14 valuable reports with analysis of various schemes and legislations which impact women.
Her key initiatives in the social sector amongst others include expansion and strengthening of the Integrated Child Development Services in India, implementation of a new scheme for maternity benefits (Indira Gandhi Matritva Sahyog Yojna), an innovative programme for empowerment of adolescent girls (Rajiv Gandhi scheme for the empowerment of adolescent girls-SABLA) and the National Mission for the Empowerment of Women. She has pioneered a new landmark legislation for children that is 'Protection of Children from Sexual Offences' and has also introduced a landmark legislation for women namely 'The Protection of Women for Sexual Harassment at Workplace'.
Smt. Tirath has represented India at several important international forums, and has been a member of important high level ministerial delegations such as the Indo-US Strategic Dialogue at Washington DC chaired by US secretary of state and co-chaired by MEA Minister from India, bilateral dialogue with US Health& Human Services department, global summit at USA on Child survival, the IBSA Women's Forum held in Pretoria, South Africa, the Global Nutrition Event chaired by United Kingdom Prime Minister in London. Under her leadership, Ministry of WCD has recently concluded the Fifth India-Brazil-South Africa (IBSA) Women's Forum meet in New Delhi from 14- 16th May resulting in a resolution on important areas of collaboration on gender issues between the three member countries.
