Guidelines for Awarding Scholarships to delegates from Low and Middle Income Countries

Overview

The Scholarships Committee will recommend scholarships to support delegates from low and middle income countries to attend the International Conference on Public Health Priorities in the 21st Century: The Endgame for Tobacco for the purpose of presenting their work or otherwise benefitting from participation in the Conference

Responsibility and Administration

The Scholarship Committee, in conjunction with the Conference Secretariat, is responsible for the administration of scholarships, including approval of criteria and final adjudication of applications.

The Scholarship Committee will undertake the initial review and scoring of scholarship applications. The Committee will review all scores assigned for the eligibility criteria and arrive at final rankings and awarding decisions.

Eligibility

To be eligible for a Conference scholarship, applicants must reside in a low or middle income country (as defined by the World Bank) and also meet the following criteria:

  • Have an abstract accepted for presentation at a scientific session, oral session or poster presentation.
  • Demonstrate a current link (employment or academic) to the Conference theme, government body, or academic research centre, or to another area of the health system with clear relevance to the Conference theme.
  • Demonstrate clear interest in becoming involved in the field of public health/tobacco control .
  • Have no prior or current association with and funding whatsoever directly or indirectly from the tobacco industry.

Expenses eligible to be covered under the full scholarships will include economy travel, airport transfers registration fees for the Conference, accommodation for the duration of the Conference and local incidentals.

Scoring of Applications

All scholarship applications are scored according on the following criteria:

  • Acceptance of an abstract oral or poster for presentation at the Conference (preference will be given to lead authors).
  • Experience in the area related to conference theme .
  • Extent to which the applicant’s attendance is likely to advance the Conference objectives.
  • Geographic location (the Scholarships Committee will strive for equitable geographical distribution of scholarships).
  • Direct link to the Conference themes, government body, or academic research centre.
  • Gender balance (where scores equal, preference will be for gender balance).

Successful applicants will be notified by email prior to the Registration deadline for the Conference, and must confirm acceptance by return email.
Scholarships may only be awarded to individuals, and cannot under any circumstances be made to organizations.
